Engineering Web Technologies for Embedded Applications

چکیده

W eb browsers have become the de facto standard user interface to a variety of applications. They can run on almost any platform—from PCs and workstations to PDAs, cell phones, and pagers—and allow end-users to access Web-enabled applications from any location. Applied to embedded systems, Web technologies offer graphical user interfaces that are user friendly, inexpensive, cross-platform, and network-ready. System designers are therefore using them to supplement or replace traditional proprietary command-line and graphical user interfaces. Web interfaces offer benefits to manufacturers as well as to end-users. Because Web-based interfaces are cross-platform and easier to develop than traditional proprietary interfaces, manufacturers enjoy a shorter timeto-market for new product features. Moreover, the costs associated with product support, training, and documentation are lower, and the Web interface can be used for remote diagnostics of products in the field.

Towards Liquid Web Applications

As the complexity of rich Web applications grows together with the power and number of Web browsers, the next Web engineering challenge to be addressed is to design and deploy Web applications to make coherent use of all devices. As users nowadays operate multiple personal computers, smart phones, tablets, and computing devices embedded into home appliances or cars, the architecture of current ...

Agent Systems in Software Engineering

During the last decade the continuous growth of the Web resulted in a significant development shift from simple types of software applications to distributed multi-tier web-based applications. In general, distributed systems are by nature more complex than centralized systems. As a result, the software engineering tasks of these systems are also complicated. Unlike traditional software applicat...

Web of Things Technologies for Embedded Applications

Web of things beyond controlling embedded devices with smart phones – this contribution raises the question what motivates to make embedded devices a full citizen of the web, what is required to integrate them and provides examples for relevant technologies which starts to enable such an integration. Concretely we discuss based on the application domains of smart home and smart grid motivation,...

Doctoral Colloquium: Integrating Web Content into Mashups on Desktop and Mobile Devices

Mashups, web application hybrids that combine content from different services, are exploiting pervasiveness of the Internet and offering great value for the end user. Constantly evolving web technologies and new web services open up unforeseen possibilities for mashup development. Combining dynamic scripts with binary software is an interesting option. However, developing mashups with current m...

Implementing Semantic Web applications: reference architecture and challenges

To date, Semantic Web research has tended to focus on data modelling challenges, at the expense of software architecture and engineering issues. Our empirical analysis shows that implementing Semantic Web technologies creates challenges which can affect the whole application. Standard solutions and best practices for Semantic Web technologies are just emerging. The lack of these has been an obs...
